The Power of Protein
THE MAGICAL AND MYSTERIOUS POWER OF PROTEIN! …by ‘Grassie’ Meadows, Staff Writer for StrongHold Gym
…DOES IT REALLY WORK?
A FACT: PROTEIN BUILDS MUSCLE AND MUSCLE BURNS FAT! HOW DO I KNOW THIS?
Just about any fitness magazine or medical journal you fan through today has an article on protein, but be careful, as at the end you will sometimes find the author is also trying to sell you something…their product! With this in mind I became extremely guarded. I’ve always been anal as to what I ingest into my body so I just decided to use myself as a guinea pig. I divided my training sessions into 3 six week periods. The first six weeks I consumed 40 grams of protein per day, recording my results in my workout journal. The second six weeks I increased it to 80 grams each day, again recording my results. Then, pushing the envelope; the last six weeks were increased to 100 grams each day. My best results were in the 80 grams a day range. Here’s some other neat stuff I noticed:
PROTEIN IS NECESSARY TO BUILD AND RETAIN MUSCLE TISSUE!
…especially when combined with good complex carbs which add level sustained energy throughout your day…
Most of us have noticed that person that went on some kind of trendy diet and lost their weight way too fast…leaving that gaunt look of sunken eyes and loose skin over their entire body; not a pretty sight. Discounting the amount of protein they should have been ingesting also caused their body to starve to the point of losing valued muscle tissue.
If your goal is to lose weight, then eat.
Just remember, your mom was right!
…eat your veggies and plenty of ‘um. They’re full of good carbs and micronutrients that give us leveled energy throughout the day.
Jumping back to protein, there’s another thing I found. It appeared from my notes that only 40 to 50 grams of protein can only be absorbed by our body at each meal; therefore to reach your goal of approximately 80 grams by the end of the day you need to break down your intake into smaller segments with perhaps a protein drink between meals.
The bottom line…protein works, it’s good for the body!
Treat yourself to a protein shake at the gym…
30 grams of protein including your daily supply of potassium and a little fat to feel full and satisfying. A healthy sweet treat that will curve that never ending sweet tooth!
